The Big Horn 100 Mile Endurance Ride- July 15, 2017
“Stuff You Need To Know”
This is the 47th Annual Big Horn 100 Mile Endurance Ride. The trail is a single loop covering private, BLM and US Forest Service land. Riders start and finish at the ride site. 50 milers finish on top of the mountain at Shell Creek Ranger Station and must arrange to trailer their horse back down to base camp after their final vet-in. Lunch will be provided at the Ranger Creek Guest Ranch after the ride is completed. If you need a trailer provided, please let ride management know ahead of time. The trail will be marked with orange ribbon, flags, arrows and flashers for darkness. This ride is a true test of endurance…covering high plains, mountains, narrow trails, creek crossings, canyons and meadows. The elevation varies from 4,000 ft to over 10,000 ft. Overall, the footing is excellent. There are some rocks, but the Big Horn would not be considered a rocky ride by most experienced riders. The weather is unpredictable…it could be 90 degrees and sunny or snowing. Be prepared. The ride begins at 4:00 A.M. in a controlled start. Riders will gather at the ride site for roll call. It is your responsibility to be there on time and ready to go. Any riders who wish to start late are welcome to do so, but all times start at 4:00 A.M. Red flashers will mark the trail for night and early morning darkness.
Base camp will be at the Mel and Sharon Picht’s Ranch; 3880 Lane 31 at Shell, Wyoming. Follow the signs from Highway 14 to the camp. Please be aware that only certified hay may be used on the trail. It can be purchased at the ride. Porta-potties will be in place at the ride camp Monday before the ride. If you can come early, there will be trail marking each day which you are welcome and encouraged to participate in.
Check In, Pre –ride Barbeque and Meeting
Pre-ride registration in will begin at 4:00 P.M. on Friday evening. Vet check will begin ay 4:30 P.M. You must enter and receive a number before being allowed to check your horse with a vet. The Barbeque will begin at 6:00 P.M. followed immediately by the pre-ride meeting. All riders’ meals are included in their entry fee. All extras are charged $5.
The awards for the 100 will be held on Sunday morning at 7:00 A.M. after a breakfast provided at the ride site. If you must leave early, please let ride management know so that any awards you may have earned can be given you. Some are large and hard to ship.

Just spoke with the Thermopolis Fairgrounds manager. He has 48 horse barns and would love to have anyone come stay. The cost is $10 a night and $15 if you want to hook up to electricity! It is a wonderful place to stay with lots of room and everything you need before the Big Horn 100 or after! Just pull in and set up. Contact Mark Bader at 307-867-2246 if you have any questions.
